Interview Tips
- Prior to Interview:
- Study your resume and re-acquaint yourself with your accomplishments.
- Educate yourself regarding the organization.
- Check out the Corporate Website.
- Check out the Corporate Annual Report.
- Be prepared to ask pertinent questions.
- Dress For Success:
- Wear a conservative suit
- No perfume/cologne
- Minimal jewelry and make-up
- No chewing gum
- Avoid smoking prior to interview
- The Interview:
- Arrive 10 minutes early - take a dry run if uncertain of location/directions.
- Bring a clean copy of your resume - one for each person you will meet.
- Be prepared to fill out an application and provide reference names.
- Give a firm handshake and smile when greeting the interviewer.
- Make direct eye contact with interviewer.
- Listen to questions before you speak to make sure you answer the questions asked. Give a complete thoughtful answer, not just yes or no.
- Never complain about a current or past employer.
- Focus on your skills and accomplishments from prior jobs, as this is the best way to tell a potential employer what you can do for him/her.
- Do not ask about salary or benefits; wait for the interviewer to bring up the topic.
- Be prepared to ask pertinent questions.
- If asked what you are earning be honest because the organization may ask to see a pay stub for verification.
- If asked what salary you are looking for, it is best to say, "I have not put a dollar figure on it. I would hope that if I am the candidate of choice, you will make me your strongest offer".
- Relax and enjoy the conversation. At the end of the interview thank the interviewer for his/her time, express interest in the job, and ask for his/her business card.
- After the Interview:
- Call your recruiter to give your impressions of the interview, the position and organization and to receive feedback.
- Write a professional thank you note to each person you have met.
