DESCRIPTION: • Create formal accounting manual describing/establishing/evolving various aspects of the accounting setup, procedures, chart of accounts, reporting, and controls
• Suggest/implement new procedures in accounting department to ensure it is running efficiently
• Analyze cost types to ensure company is running efficiently from a cost perspective; suggest changes to make/meet cost goals
• Ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations including any grants subject to Uniform Grant Guidance
• Gain understanding of the IT systems from an accounting perspective in order to ensure and maintain that It systems are working properly and are enforcing the policies
• Manage Accounting Department and supporting staff; evolve group to handle new Institute changes
• Assist in negotiations with vendors, including employee Benefits vendors
• Supervise A/P, A/R, billing, purchase orders, receiving, debt, Grants management, payroll, retirement, and investment accounts
• Serve as lead manager in the development and reporting of indirect cost calculations
• Review monthly financial and reporting packages for all departments to assess reasonableness and accuracy of data
• Review and approve month-end, quarter-end, and year-end journal entries
• Support/direct development of and “Enterprise-Wide” Risk Management function
• Review and execute monthly accounting close process including analytical review of the monthly operating results and their comparison to budget to ensure accurate accounting records are maintained
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Prepare month to date and year to date cash flow statements
• Prepare work papers and forms supporting the annual not-for-profit regulatory, tax, and other reporting requirements
• Work with Audit Firm and Board Audit Committee to establish annual audit plan and annual audit on a timely basis
• Perform cash projections to effectively manage cash balances and maximize the return on any excess cash balances
• Perform proper analytical review of operations from a balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow perspective as well as an overall business perspective
• Develop the annual budget and coordinate with the labs and other administrative functions to include their information
• In conjunction with the Executive Director and Board, perform analysis, execution, and recording of any external funding activity
• Interface with Burke Foundation to provide analysis, when requested, to secure annual Burke Foundation allotment
• Perform responsibilities and projects as assigned
EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA is a plus. He/she must have experience in medical research focused organizations and 10+ years of hands-on accounting and managerial experience. He/she must have strong general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, regulatory, grants management, and banking knowledge. He/she must have proven ability to reach out to other departments to discuss and work through daily issues as they arise. Excellent written/oral communication skills plus organizing, planning, and prioritizing skills are essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (spreadsheet proficient) and Quick Books are required.
